ICC Announced: All teams are allowed to make changes to their squad until 25 May, after which any alteration will require approval from ICC’s Event Technical Committee.
They brought back Ashton Agar, a left-arm spinner, even though he hasn’t played a T20I since the last World Cup in Australia. They also selected Marcus Stoinis, Tim David, and Cameron Green, alongside Glenn Maxwell, for their all-round skills. This blend of experienced and new players aims to make the team strong for the upcoming games.
George Bailey, Australian selection chair said the squad is full of experienced players who’ve been in World Cups before. They have different plans for different situations, considering the unique venues and opponents in the West Indies. He’s glad Ashton Agar is back after some bad injuries.
They think Ashton, along with Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, Cam Green, and Mitch Marsh, will be important for our attack. They can adjust their batting strategy for each place they play and the team they face.
Bailey noticed that having only 15 players on the squad meant some really good players missed out.
“We had long talks about Steve Smith, Matt Short, Jason Behrendorff, Aaron Hardie, Spencer Johnson, and Xavier Bartlett, plus others like Jake Fraser-McGurk, who’s new but doing great,” Bailey explained.
“Having just 15 players for the World Cup is tough because we want to cover all our bases.
“We’ll keep an eye on the players we didn’t pick, and we can still make changes to the squad if needed, according to the rules.
“In the end, the final 15 need to give us the best shot at winning.”
Marsh has been filling in as Australia’s temporary T20I captain for almost a year. Now, he’s set to lead the team at his first major tournament—the T20 World Cup.
“It’s been great playing for my country, and now it’s even better leading the team to the World Cup,” Marsh said.
“We’ve been doing well lately, and I hope we keep it up in the tournament.”
Australia starts their T20 World Cup journey against Oman in Barbados on June 5. After that, they play against England, Namibia, and Scotland in Group B matches.
